About us

VR Dance prides itself on providing a solid foundation to pupils in various dance styles within a fun, professional and friendly environment. Whether pupils are wishing to pursue a career in dance or attend classes just for pleasure, we offer something for everyone.

The school currently offers classes for pupils aged 3 and upwards in ballet, tap and modern under the ISTD (The Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing) curriculum, taught by fully qualified staff. We regularly enter pupils for examinations in all disciplines and, for many years, have achieved a 100% pass rate.

We are also offer classes in musical production and street jazz, to find out more about the classes we offer please get in touch.
Our dance classes

Our history

The Vera Robinson School of Dancing was established in 1952 by Vera Robinson.
The first class was held in the King's Hall at Blighs Hotel followed by a short period at the Sevenoaks Services Club. The school moved to the Cornwall Halls in 1958, where classes remain to this day. With the number of pupils increasing, Miss Linda Pilkington joined the school in 1964 whilst Miss Robinson’s daughter, Diana Thwaites began teaching in 1974. On Miss Robinson’s retirement in 1995, Diana took on the role of Principal to the school.

Since our founding, over 2000 pupils have progressed through the school, including several generations of some families. In December 2012, Diana decided it was time for her to retire and pass on the reins to a new generation.

Upon Diana’s retirement, Kiera took over as Principal. In December 2012, the Vera Robinson School of Dancing was renamed to the VR Dance, keeping the longstanding traditional values running from the roots of the school.

Teachers

Miss Kiera (AISTD, LISTD (DDP), Level 6 Dip. in Dance Pedagogy, Level 6 Dip. in Professional Dance, LAMDA) - Principal
Kiera took over as Principal for VR Dance in December 2012 and has over 15 years teaching experience. With a love for dance from an early age, Kiera studied at The Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts in London, gaining her teaching qualifications with the ISTD. After leaving college, Kiera pursued a career as a professional dancer whilst teaching part-time, and developed a passion for teaching. Kiera is dedicated to VR Dance and is committed to sharing her knowledge and experience with all her pupils.

Miss Kerry (LISTD) - Teacher of Tap and Modern
Kerry trained at Italia Conti Academy for six years, leaving with her Performing Arts Diploma and ISTD teaching qualifications in modern and tap. Since graduating, she has taught in many schools in and around Kent and choreographed for numerous shows, including shows at The Old Vic and Her Majesty's in London. Kerry continued her teaching qualifications at The Centre, first gaining her ISTD diplomas and later on receiving her Licentiate in both modern and tap.

Miss Lucy (DDE) - Teacher of Ballet, Modern and Tap
Lucy trained at The Centre Performing Arts College, studying a wide variety of dance genres, and graduated with her ISTD teaching qualifications in ballet, tap and modern. Lucy's obvious love of dance and dedication to her subject make her a welcome member of the VR Dance teaching team.

Performances

At VR Dance our pupils are given the opportunity to take part in many performing events. We hold our whole school productions on a biennial basis as well as taking part in regular local events. The experience of taking part in our shows provides our pupils with not only the aspects of a working theatre but also great memories of their time with us at VR Dance.
